10-19-09 Jim Fanin’s Guide to Empowerment From EJ Pfister
by Carissa Stevens on Mon Oct 2009
One of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Golf Instructors, EJ Pfister, was kind enough to contribute to this week’s blog.
This past week I was fortunate enough to attend a teaching summit headed by Jim Hardy, Golf Digest Top 50 Teacher, in Houston. One of the featured speakers was Jim Fanin. Jim is an educator, author, consultant, speaker, life strategist, and mental coach. He has worked with Fortune 500 Companies, professional athletes, actors, singers, screen writers, artists, and politicians. Jim has developed what he calls the S.C.O.R.E. system to help his clients make positive life changes. From business, relationships, sports or parenting Jim has advised his clients on their biggest decisions. I wanted to share his model and how it applies to golf.
The Building Blocks of a Champion- The S.C.O.R.E. System
S= Self Discipline
- well defined goals with a time limit - even when it comes to a practice sessionC= Concentration
- Hunter mentality equivalent of a lion stalking its preyO= Optimism
- You need to act and believe you are the best - a little secret for this one is to walk with your chin parallel to the ground with a soft jaw - a combination of these two things make it difficult for negativity to creep inR= Relaxation
- Technique to achieve relaxation is to put your hand on your bellybutton and inhale filling your abdominal and chest cavity with air - exhale slowly- letting your hand move with your bellyE= Enjoyment
- Don’t look at difficult situations as problems - champions view them as challenges and take pride in conquering the challenge
Being aware of the S.C.O.R.E. system will give you a foundation for the proper mindset on the golf course. If practiced over time, I truly believe that lower scores will be achieved. This does take practice….no different than working on your game…and is equally as important.
